A hair detangler works on the whole head, not strand by strand. You comb large swaths, find the knots, then work them out. Sections, cross-references, argument flow, and repetition are the swaths. Sentences are the strands.

The knots come from editing. A long draft, many passes, more than one pair of hands — especially an agent. Each change looks fine. The document tangles: a pointer at a heading that moved, an argument that later rewrites left behind, the same claim said twice, a section that grew until it swallowed the rest.
